Thermal Imaging

The blower door test is a building diagnostic tool
that measures the air tightness of a building.
The testing apparatus consists of a variable
speed fan, a sealed door assembly, and a
pressure transducer. The entire assembly is
placed in an open doorway, and the fan is used
to bring the interior pressure of the house down
to negative 50 pascals. The pressure transducer
measures the air flow through the fan which
provides a measure of air infiltration into the
building. This is also an ideal time to use
infrared thermography to pinpoint the location of
leaks within the building envelope.
Infrared imaging is a non-
destructive testing method that
allows for evaluation of the integrity
of the building envelope. Infrared
cameras measure infrared radiation
emanating from objects and
surfaces. An infrared survey of a
building reveals temperature
differences within the building
envelope caused by missing or
damaged insulation, air leaks,
water damage, insect damage, and
other defects within the building
envelope. This is a particularly
effective tool for diagnosing
envelope problems when coupled
with a blower door test.
Duct blasting is a technique used to
measure the magnitude of leaks within a
duct system. Leaky ducts can contribute
to poor energy efficiency of a building,
poor air quality, and a lack of comfort of
the occupants. Perhaps most
importantly leaky ducts can cause health
and safety issues by back-drafting
combustion appliances. The testing
apparatus consists of a variable speed
fan connected to the duct system and a
pressure transducer that measures the
pressure inside and outside of the duct
system. Accurate measurements of duct
leakage inside and outside the building
envelope can be obtained when
combined with a blower door test.
